As the weekend approaches, it’s time to bring you another streaming recommendation. Spaceman, the new sci-fi drama that takes Adam Sandler to new heights, is now available on Netflix, Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon is now available on Apple TV Plus, and Sofia Coppola’s latest film Priscilla It’s been a good week for movies, with MUBI releasing in the UK.
When it comes to TV shows, Hulu and Disney are producing a sprawling, action-packed political drama that rivals Game of Thrones with Shogun. Elsewhere, Rye Lane star Vivian Opara stars in Prime Video’s new British comedy-drama Dead Hot, while Noel Fielding stars in Apple TV Plus’ The Perfectly Made Adventures of Dick Turpin and The Tourist. Season,” which puts a comical and surreal twist on 18th century history. 2 has finally arrived in the US via Netflix.

Adam Sandler will star in Spaceman, the new sci-fi drama from Chernobyl director Johan Lenk. He plays Jakub, an astronaut on a lonely mission to the edge of the solar system, only to realize that the life he left behind on Earth may not be waiting for him when he returns. . Wanting to give his marriage another go, Jakub seeks advice from Hanush (voiced by Paul Dano), an extraterrestrial spider hiding on a ship. The cast also includes Carey Mulligan as Jakub’s wife Lenka and Isabella Rossellini as the commander.

Game of Thrones meets feudal Japan in the new historical drama Shogun, based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell. When British sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is shipwrecked in Japan, his path crosses with the powerful Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the mysterious samurai Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai). The scales may be tipped irreversibly. The show was co-created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who was a writer on Top Gun: Maverick. The first two episodes of his are currently streaming, and the rest will be released every Tuesday.

Director Ridley Scott’s latest film is a biopic of Napoleon Bonaparte like no other. If the director’s press tour words weren’t enough to get him to the multiplex (“When I have a problem with a historian, I ask, ‘Excuse me, dude, were you there? No? Well, Then shut up.”) allows you to press play on Apple TV Plus and watch Joaquin Phoenix play the role of the Emperor of France from the comfort of your own home. Vanessa Kirby is in great form as Napoleon’s wife Josephine, and the cast also includes Madame Web’s Tahar Rahim and House of the Dragon’s Matthew Needham.

Recently nominated for a BAFTA, Vivienne Opara, who starred in Rye Lane, will star in the new comedy-drama about love and heartbreak from showrunner Charlotte Coben (daughter of Fool Me Once author Harlan). He co-stars with Bilal Hasna from “Extraordinary” in “Dead Hot.” The two play Jess and Elliot. Two friends bonded by the trauma of losing a loved one, Peter is Jess’s twin brother and Elliot’s first love. Five years after Peter disappeared, Elliot is trying to move on, but things quickly escalate when Jess is contacted by someone claiming to be Peter.

Comedian and Great British Bake Off host Noel Fielding will star in Apple TV Plus’ new comedy series The Perfectly Made Adventures of Dick Turpin. He plays the titular 18th-century real-life hitman in a series of absurdist, fictionalized adventures featuring supporting characters who are masters of British comedy. Look out for Hugh Bonneville, Tamsin Greig, Greg Davies and Diane Morgan. The first two episodes of him are available to stream now, with the rest coming every Friday.

Following Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Sofia Coppola brings us a very different Graceland biopic with Priscilla. The film begins in Germany in the 1960s, where 14-year-old high school girl Priscilla Beaulieu first meets Elvis, and ends with her divorce ten years later. Kailey Spaeny plays the title role, and Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi plays Elvis. King. Although he’s been unfairly absent from this year’s awards season conversation, expect Coppola’s signature lavish production design and intimate portraits of femininity. For U.S. viewers, the film is currently streaming on Max.

Jamie Dornan is returning for the second season of the thriller series The Tourist. In the first film, Dornan’s Elliot was an amnesiac trying to rediscover his identity after waking up in the Australian outback, but in season two, he returns to his hometown in Ireland. It seems like what he learned in the outback is only part of the story, and Elliot needs to learn more about himself and his family. The new season was released in the UK last month and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
