South Korea’s leading convenience store chain, 7-Eleven, is expected to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology to enhance store operations.
7-Eleven plans to commercialize digital shelves for alcoholic beverages by the end of this year, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday.
The technology was unveiled at a product exhibition in Seoul last week and attracted attention for its innovative approach.
The key to the digital liquor display is the installation of motion sensors on the shelves. The AI system reads the customer’s arm movements and displays information about products of interest in real time.
This technology has been tested at a 7-Eleven LDCC store in Gasan-dong, Seoul since July 2023.
Such technology enables comprehensive data analysis to provide insight into which locations on the shelf are attracting consumer attention and to identify popular products for cross-selling.
According to company officials, this system can encourage customers who are interested but hesitant to buy because they don’t know enough about the product to make a purchase.

Another highlight of the product display is the AI FC feature.
Through the mobile app, store owners and part-time employees can ask questions about various aspects of store operations and receive instant answers.
Full implementation of this feature is planned for the second quarter of this year.
7-Eleven’s technological advances are in line with parent company Lotte Group’s recent focus on comprehensive technological innovation, including AI.
Lotte Holdings plans to set up a new exhibition hall in front of the general meeting of shareholders to be held at Lotte World Tower in Seoul on March 28 to demonstrate the group’s efforts in new businesses.
The exhibition will showcase the group’s metaverse platform Caliverse.
The platform utilizes virtual reality (VR) video filming and compositing techniques to create a virtual space that can recreate the appearance of real-life individuals, with potential applications in shopping and entertainment.
Caliverse is also the name of the XR solution developer acquired by Lotte Data Communication.
