Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently expanded its free credits program for startups aimed at covering costs associated with using its leading AI models, the company told Reuters.
This expansion is part of AWS’ strategy to increase market share for its AI platform, Bedrock. Startups can now use cloud credits to access models from a variety of providers, including Anthropic, Meta, Mistral AI, and Cohere.
Amazon supports startups with free AI model credits
Howard Wright, vice president and global head of startups at AWS, described the move as a move to support the startup ecosystem and encourage them to choose AWS as their first choice. He emphasized the importance of providing startups with a wide range of options and ensuring security.
The expansion comes on the heels of Amazon’s additional $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic, which now totals $4 billion. His Anthropic, currently one of Bedrock’s most popular models, utilizes his AWS as its primary cloud provider. This partnership includes building and training models using Trainium and Inferentia chips. The long-term commitment will ensure that his AWS customers around the world have access to the next generation of Anthropic foundational models on Amazon Bedrock.
Wright emphasized that Amazon’s free credits will contribute to Anthropic’s revenue, reflecting the company’s commitment to building an ecosystem. Over the past decade, AWS has provided more than $6 billion in credits to startups, demonstrating its commitment to supporting startups.

AWS offers $500,000 in credits
AWS is collaborating with Y Combinator to provide $500,000 in credits to the latest cohort, giving startups access to AI models and chips from Amazon. This initiative aims to reduce the economic burden associated with the use of AI. Depending on how much AI is used, startups can be burdened.
According to Reuters, other major cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure are also offering credits that apply to OpenAI’s models, and Google is offering credits to Vertex AI’s more than 130 models. But these investments in AI startups have drawn regulatory scrutiny, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) opening investigations into companies including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon over their investments in Anthropic. .
Additionally, AWS and NVIDIA recently announced the introduction of the new NVIDIA Blackwell GPU platform on AWS, which provides advanced infrastructure for generative AI capabilities.
Amazon’s expansion of its free credit program demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting AI companies and driving innovation in this space. AWS intends to strengthen its position as a leading provider of AI solutions in the cloud computing market by partnering with leading AI providers and investing in cutting-edge technology.
