HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) — William Byron has been active at the reconfigured Atlanta Motor Speedway, leading the NASCAR Cup Series since the track was dramatically renovated with a fresh surface and higher banks. He won two of the four races.
That doesn’t mean Byron feels entirely comfortable in Atlanta.
Byron, the newly crowned Daytona 500 champion, still has mixed feelings about Sunday’s Cup Series race in Atlanta.
“It’s definitely unique,” Byron said before qualifying 11th on Saturday. “I don’t want to do it every week.”
Ford drivers took seven of the top nine qualifying spots. Michael McDowell won his first pole in his 467th career start. Following a close second-place finish behind Joey Logano in qualifying for the Daytona 500 last week, McDowell defeated Logano on Saturday.
Kyle Busch finished third and Kyle Larson fifth, making them the only Chevrolets in the top nine, one spot behind Todd Gilliland’s Ford.
Atlanta added a superspeedway-style race to the 1.54-mile track in its 2021 postseason reconfiguration. Like the high banks, the overtaking width is narrow. Before the changes were made, drivers made annual pleas to preserve the old, dilapidated surface, speaking almost unanimously of their love for racing at the circuit.
Discussions about the reconstituted Atlanta track have a different tone.
Mr Busch acknowledged that a new surface was needed due to apparent “deterioration” and said: “There comes a time when something has to be done.”
It took two years to get used to the new look, but Busch still doesn’t seem to like the reconfiguration.
“I don’t understand or understand why they added banking capabilities and what they did here with the reconfiguration,” Bush said. “Would I have rather seen them just repaving what they had? Probably.”
Further changes were made to the schedule. The first race in Atlanta was moved up after Daytona on NASCAR’s schedule to open the season with back-to-back speedway races. Atlanta will also play the first race of the playoffs on September 8th.
fuel savings
Denny Hamlin, who qualified 13th in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, said NASCAR was “doing some kind of “I expect they will make adjustments,” he said.
Busch was harshly critical of the tactics used by the team to keep the car on the track.
“I think that’s a problem,” Bush said. “At the start of the race last week, we were all sitting at half throttle.”
Mr. Bush called the suppressed race “disgraceful” and “pathetic.”
“I felt sorry for the fans and I thought this wasn’t good for them,” Busch said.
Logano said the issue could prevent drivers from taking the lead early in the race.
“As you can see, the further back you go, the more fuel you save, but the more control you have,” Logano said.
big apple, big spotlight
Byron, who narrowly defeated Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman in the Daytona 500, will travel to New York for a series of races on Tuesday. Bowman, who appeared in the Netflix documentary series “Full Speed,” said he is enjoying his new role as a figurehead in the sports world.
“It was fun,” Byron said. “Everything we got to do this week was fun, especially because it was unique and different. I had a lot of questions. …Obviously, I was running on adrenaline for a few days, but… Now I’m back on the racetrack.”
Victory, defeat and outcome
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Denny Hamlin is the favorite to win at 17-2. Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson are next at 10-1 odds, followed by Byron and Logano at 12-1. … Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s 47 Chevrolet failed two inspections Friday. JTG Daugherty Racing engineer Max Kennon was sent off over the weekend. Stenhouse, the 2023 Daytona 500 winner, qualified 27th.
next
The NASCAR Cup Series moves to Las Vegas Motor Speedway next weekend. Elliott said it will be a clear race for the team.
“I’m happy with where I’m at right now,” said Elliott, who won at Atlanta in 2022 and finished 14th at Daytona last week after winning the first stage. Elliott is looking to bounce back from a winless 2023 season.
“I think we’re in a good position and I think we’ll get the first report card next week as to where I really stand on a regular racetrack. I’m looking forward to getting out there and seeing it, but today I It’s hard to guess until you’re out there because it’s just a guess to answer you.”
