Speedometer, the browser benchmarking tool, has been updated to version 3.0. Remarkably, the companies that develop four of the most popular browsers are collaborating on a new release.
The first version of Speedometer dates back to 2014 and was developed by Apple’s WebKit team. Later, version 2.0 was released in his 2018 year. Meanwhile, the makers of Safari are working with three of its most prominent competitors. Google (Chrome), Microsoft (Edge), and Mozilla (Firefox) are all actively contributing to version 3.0.

In the announcement, the four parties noted that Speedometer 3.0 was born out of a unique partnership. After all, this is the first time a benchmarking tool for browsers supports all major engines. Blink, which supports Chromium and powers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, is the most widely used. Firefox runs on Gecko, while Safari is built on WebKit.
Improvements everywhere
Speedometer 3.0 consists of a number of tests. Benchmarking not only ensures that users get the fastest solution for their purposes, but also helps point out shortcomings to authors. It includes everything from data visualization and code editing to running a news site and implementing JavaScript. The fact that Speedometer has traditionally been developed by Apple doesn’t mean Safari wins. In version 2.0, Google Chrome even managed to get the highest score across the entire benchmark suite on the M1 MacBook.
