The Apple Watch Ultra has been rumored to feature an upgraded microLED display for more than a year, but manufacturing issues have pushed that deadline to 2027. In a new development, Apple has reportedly canceled a large microLED order with Austrian company ams. Osram, which is speculated to be for the next Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Osram did not confirm that Apple was the client withdrew from a major MicroLED deal, but stated in a dedicated press release that “Fundamental projects supporting the MicroLED strategy have been unexpectedly canceled and the company has withdrawn from the MicroLED strategy. It gave me an opportunity to reevaluate.” .
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo agreed, confirming that Apple has canceled its microLED Apple Watch project with Osram. Kuo also shared that Apple has canceled all projects related to micro-LED displays because the technology does not add much value to its products. Apple has also reportedly determined that the cost of manufacturing microLEDs is too high to be economically viable.
But as Bloomberg’s Mark Garman notes, some have their doubts. Claim He suggested that ams-Osram is just one of Apple’s microLED suppliers and that the next Apple Watch Ultra will feature the latest display technology. Apple is rumored to gradually switch to microLED displays across its device portfolio, starting with the Apple Watch, then the iPad, iPhone, and eventually the MacBook.
