Exclusive: Apple Studios has announced the three participants selected for its inaugural Directors Program, described as a comprehensive new initiative focused on expanding opportunities for mid-career directors across the United States.
Maureen Barucha, Yoko Okumura and Marshall Tyler were selected to participate in a six-month program that provides master classes focused on building and sustaining a career as an episodic director. This program includes discussions with experienced industry experts focused on the art and business of directing, the opportunity to participate as his director shadowing the Apple Studios series, and an opportunity to participate as his director in the Apple Studios series tailored to stimulate innovation and innovation. Maureen Bharucha has directed feature films, late night films, premium cable, episodic television, and short films. Her latest feature film, The Plank, starring the legendary Rita Moreno and Keith David, was released in theaters this March, and her first feature film, The Golden Arm, was sold to HBO in 2020. . Maureen’s television credits include three years as a television corner director. Episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NBC’s “Grand Crew,” “Crank Yonkers,” “Saved by the Bell,” Peacock’s “Pitch Perfect” spinoff, “Bumpers in Berlin,” and Hulu’s new show “Deli Boys.” She is currently co-writing the new horror comedy Tina’s 40th Birthday Party with Mary Holland and Betsy Sodaro, which she will also direct and produce for Sharon Horgan’s Merman Television.
Maureen is passionate about finding the fun in any scene she directs, but is equally adept at eliciting strong dramatic performances. Raised in a half-Irish-Catholic, half-Indian-Pakistani-Burmese-Muslim household, Maureen is a master at straddling conflicting worlds and blending genres, focusing on stories of conflicting characters. Yoko Okumura
Yoko Okumura (she/her) is a fluid genre writer and director who thrives at the intersection of grit and charm. Born in a Buddhist temple in Japan and raised in the frostbite of Minneapolis, she is obsessed with telling her rebellious story through her underrepresented perspective.
She directed the feature-length thriller “Unseen” for Blumhouse/Paramount, and the episode “Ball of Twine” from Sam Raimi’s horror anthology “50 States of Fright” is streaming as a Roku Original. Yoko has also directed many of her hour-long episodes of television, including “Good Trouble” and “The Bold Type.”
She is a sponsored director of the Women In Film + Sundance ReFrame Rise program and participates in top director initiatives such as the Warner Bros. Directors Workshop, the Ryan Murphy Half Initiative, and the Fox Directors Program. Her films have won numerous awards, including the Austin Film Festival Jury Award, DGA Award, and Webby Award.
Yoko holds a bachelor’s degree from CalArts and a master’s degree from AFI, and lives and works in Los Angeles. When he’s not on set, he’s a fire dancer and aerialist. He’s working on art and would like to learn how to do a backflip. Mr. Okumura is repped by CAA and Ronin Entertainment.
Marshall Tyler
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Hawaii and San Diego, Marshall Tyler is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and television director. His episodic directorial work includes FOX’s “9-1-1” (Angela Bassett), Showtime’s “City on a Hill” (Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge) and Amazon’s “Leverage: Redemption” (Noah Wyle and Aldis Hodge) and BET+/Paramount+’s edgy, suspense-driven dark comedy “Average Joe” (Deon Cole). As a writer and director, Marshall’s short films “Night Shift,” “Cap,” and “Slow Pulse” have premiered to critical acclaim at film festivals including Sundance, ABFF HBO Short Film Competition, and Tribeca. All three films won at the Chicago Film Festival, Urban World Film Festival, and Pan-African Film Festival, making them eligible for Oscars, and air on HBO, CBS, and BET.
In addition to being selected for the Apple Studios Directors Program, Marshall is also a 2018-2020 graduate of the ABC Disney Television Directors Program and a 2018 Fellow of the Ryan Murphy Half Initiative. Through his company New Bumpers and Paint, Marshall is currently in production on his feature debut, Fever Dream, and is the director of an upcoming feature-length documentary about the life of legendary designer Willie.
