What is Nudge for macOS?
Nudge is a handy, lightweight open-source app designed to gently nudge employees towards updating their company’s Macs, ensuring everything follows IT department expectations. Cleverly pop up reminders in places you won’t want to miss. These reminders will start appearing more frequently until your Mac is updated and you check all the appropriate boxes. Below is an old but still applicable presentation on nudges.
How do nudges work?
Nudge works silently in the background through LaunchAgent. Specify that behavior by setting update frequency and version obligations in your profile or her JSON file. It works by comparing the installed version of macOS to stated requirements. If the current version of the system matches or exceeds the required version, the nudge remains inactive. Conversely, if your system version is behind, Nudge will display a notification to the user and highlight the discrepancy between the current macOS version and the desired macOS version.
Whenever Apple releases a new update, you must update your profile with the latest version requirements and corresponding deadlines, and deploy this updated directive. I haven’t investigated his JSON configuration path in detail, but it seems like a viable and perhaps preferable alternative.
Nudge’s reminders will increase in frequency as your renewal deadline approaches. After the deadline, the claims escalate further. Basically, his role as an Apple IT administrator using Nudge revolves around updating and managing profiles or his JSON files according to the required instructions, which can be adapted at any time according to Apple updates. Masu. It also provides some optional configuration options.
How do nudges unfold?
However, you can also deploy Nudge configurations directly to Macs using package deployment through your device management system. In general, we recommend that you build a managed configuration profile (.mobileconfig) and push it through your device management system.
summary
Even if Nudge were a commercial app, it would still be one of the most valuable tools for macOS administrators. As an open source tool, we all have a debt of gratitude to the team behind it. It’s helping thousands of businesses become more secure. It does a great job of “coaxing” people to update their Macs to the version they need in a time frame that allows them to stay productive, but it also lets them know that an update is coming soon. Required Because it takes time to update.
