More information about the future of macOS 15 is expected to be announced when Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) takes place on June 10th. One app in particular is rumored to be getting a major upgrade.
The app is a calculator app, and while it’s probably not the most exciting piece of software Apple has made, AppleInsider notes that the upcoming upgrade is the “most significant upgrade” the app has received “in years.” ”.
It’s so substantial that it has its own codename: GreyParrot (which is said to be a reference to the African parrot, which is known for its cognitive abilities). Part of this upgrade appears to include Math Notes functionality, which has already been rumored in conjunction with the upcoming Notes app upgrade in iOS 18.
Math Notes seems to make it easier to exchange calculations between Notes and Calculator apps. A new sidebar showing the history of the calculator is also reportedly in the works. According to AppleInsider, this could include adding its own button on the app.
currency conversion
A visual redesign is also planned, with “round buttons and a darker shade of black” to match the iOS calculator. Users can also resize the Calculator app’s window and the buttons will resize accordingly, but this is currently not possible.
According to AppleInsider, unit conversions are now more intuitive and accessible, eliminating the need to open a menu to select a conversion type instead of currently having to select a currency in a pop-up dialog.
Apple wants to be more competitive with apps like Microsoft’s OneNote and third-party Calcbot apps for macOS. It’s been a long time since the Calculator app has been modified in any way, and its fairly basic feature set lags behind other alternatives.
According to AppleInsider, there is no guarantee that Apple will perform this Calculator upgrade, but it seems likely. At his WWDC 2024 on June 10th, there will be more announcements about macOS 15, iOS 18, and other software products from Apple.
