Aubrey Plaza found the speculation surrounding Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” to be “kind of funny.”
The Godfather director is preparing to premiere his $120m (£95m) sci-fi epic at the Cannes Film Festival later this week. The film, which he personally financed, has been the subject of much speculation due to its lack of distribution and the lackluster response to its only press screening.
The Parks and Recreation star, who plays journalist Wow Platinum in the film, admitted he was amused by the gossip.
“I thought it was kind of funny,” she told Deadline. “I’d defend Francis all day long, but he doesn’t need my defense. When you’re on the inside and you know what’s really going on, it’s almost like ‘talk to them. I think it’s something like, “Why not let them make it up and make a fuss about it and get attention for the movie?” In my head, everything will work out for the movie in the end. ”
Plaza said people are hoping the film will be a “disaster” because of the “myths” surrounding Coppola’s films, including the infamously tumultuous production of 1979’s Apocalypse Now. insisted.
“People want that with every Apocalypse Now story, especially in his case. They want it to be a disaster, they want something big epic. … Anything,” she said. “Knowing Francis as much as I do now, I think he wouldn’t care at all and would love the stories being told about the movie. ‘Go ahead, make up all the stories you want.’ And. “
Elsewhere in the interview, the Ingrid Goes West star revealed that she didn’t learn that Coppola had hired director Mike Figgis to film the making-of documentary until a week into production.
“We’ve been filming for a week, maybe longer, and it’s not until he introduces himself that you realize there’s a real documentary being made, and Mike Figgis is operating the camera. I didn’t even know it was there,” she said. . “I don’t know what’s going on in that documentary, but I hope they get approval for all the footage.”
“Megalopolis,” which also stars Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel and Giancarlo Esposito, premieres in Cannes on Thursday.
