A first look at a prototype of Meta’s augmented reality glasses was released Tuesday by an internal source at the company.
The augmented reality glasses, named ‘Orion’, are expected to integrate real environments with digital reality and applications. According to the report, many Meta employees have already begun experimenting with the glasses. The AR glasses were developed in the company’s research labs under the watchful eye of CEO Mark Zuckerberg.Earlier this year, Zuckerberg posted several versions of Meta Glass on his desktop. A company official revealed that one of the products will be augmented reality glasses that the company plans to release. However, a company spokesperson declined to confirm this.
The company, which has been working on AR glasses for years, plans to unveil a prototype in 2024, with an early version potentially available this fall, according to a release.
Augmented reality glasses are a central part of Meta’s plans to expand development of wearable products. Additional reports suggest the new glasses are expected to be the most advanced currently available, hinting at competition between the company and Apple.
Apple’s AR glasses sold out before they hit stores.
Meanwhile, Apple is rushing to produce augmented reality glasses after the company sold out of its 200,000 pre-orders even before they went on sale a few weeks ago.
The company has not yet said when the glasses will reach the top of Apple Store shelves, but it does not expect them to arrive in Israel for the time being.
