Colman Domingo: ‘Oscars is the perfect time to tell a story with fashion’
Oscar-nominated Rustin’ star Colman Domingo talks with USA TODAY’s Brian Truitt about red carpet look this year’s awards season.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards are about awards, and they’re a precursor to the Oscars.
I loved that they won two awards (for their stunt work) on the red carpet. (Ah, Oscar producers!) And we noted how often F-bombs have been dropped since it aired on Netflix.
But please bear with us if we may have been watching your favorite fashion moment. And we were not disappointed.
Ayo Edebiri wins the award for the fourth year in a row – he’s doing great
Edebiri looked amazing as he won the top prize at the last four big award shows for his work in “The Bear.” Forget EGOT, look at what Edebiri won this season: Globes, Emmys, Critics Choice, SAG. Can we give it a new name? GECS?
At SAG, Edebiri performed in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy, wearing Lure. (I’m sure you’ve heard this line before.) “The Bear” series.
She won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for her performance in Season 2 of The Bear Wears Red Prada.
She won an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Sculptural Louis Vuitton Comedy Series.
She won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Row” in a white suit.

Kids as stylists steal the show
Sheryl Lee Ralph almost always mentions her daughter, stylist Ivy Coco, on the red carpet.
But on this carpet, the stylist was a little younger.
Hannah Waddingham’s sparkling ruby dress sparkled. But our favorite was Waddingham’s daughter’s EPIC cardboard clutch designed with colored markers.
On Kieran Culkin’s wrist was a friendship bracelet and a pile of silver rings on his hand, which he said were just “funny things” he bought with his daughter.
Do you include brooches for men?
Jeremy Allen White accented his white suit with a sparkling brooch. And since Kieran Culkin also wore a sparkly brooch from jeweler Martin Katz, we’re declaring it a red carpet trend.
We love brooches as a way to dress up a traditional suit or tuxedo, rather than choosing from a variety of suit shapes. This year’s awards season saw brooches from the likes of Lamorne Morris and Robert Downey Jr.
Expect more during the Oscars!
“The Devil Wears Prada” reunion
It was enough to see Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep (wearing Prada) together. But Hathaway wore teal Versace, inspired by Andy’s look in The Devil Wears Prada, and Streep’s monologue as Miranda Priestly was perfect.
take off shoes
As Elizabeth Debicki began running onto the stage to accept her award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, “The Crown,” she stopped short of the stairs. She took off her shoes and accepted the award.
Eh! Red carpet host Elaine Welteroth also ditched her shoes. She admitted that she was being interviewed barefoot because one of her shoes was “killing” her.
Uncomfortable shoes were a bit of a theme. When Ali Wong accepted her award, she said her mother came to the show wearing Tevas.
