Ishtar
Where to watch: Reference channel
Genre: comedy
director: Elaine May
cast: Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, Isabelle Adjani
It is best known as the film that ended the career of the great director and comedian Elaine May. Ishtar It was unfairly maligned at the time, but fortunately its reputation has been restored and it’s beginning to be recognized as one of the great comedies of the 1980s. It’s too late, but at least it’s happening and now you too can be part of that big rethink.
Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty play two unlucky aspiring musicians who are deceived by almost everyone in their lives in their quest for success. As a result, they find themselves in the middle of a Cold War standoff in Morocco, caught between the CIA and a plot to overthrow the local government.
Part of the film’s brilliance is how Hoffman and Beatty play against type. It would be easy to imagine Beatty as the confident leader and Hoffman as the cheerful fool, but the roles are reversed to great comedic effect. Beatty, in particular, is arm-splittingly funny as the completely incompetent Lyle Rodgers.
Ishtar This is also a great example of the incredibly difficult feat of a good artist intentionally writing bad art into his work. This duo’s songs are really bad, so I’ll go back to being perfect. Genre: historical comedy
director: Yorgos Lanthimos
cast: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz
Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek director of the bizarre, award-winning dark comedy, has released his latest collaboration with Emma Stone. poor thing. It’s scheduled to arrive on Hulu in early March (March 7th to be exact), but I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t recommend it yet.
We recommend their previous collaborations. favoriteIn my opinion, this is Lanthimos’ strongest film to date. Set in early 18th century England, the film follows two cousins (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone) competing for the affections of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). This insanely funny movie relies heavily on the great performances of its three leads, and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards.
