Spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen it yet, run away because we’re discussing the important plot summary and ending of Sasquatch Sunset (currently in theaters).
If you’ve ever been interested in the mythology of Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, Sasquatch Sunset is the movie for you.
What kind of movie is it? Consider the slapstick nature docudrama “The Office” meets “David Attenborough Presents.”
Written and directed by David and Nathan Zellner, the 90-minute film explores Northern California’s prehistoric forests and alleged Bigfoot stomping grounds to explore Bigfoot. (Is that an expression?) imagining what it would be like to track down a family. .
There’s anger, humor, sex, and death in this year-long journey, which also stars (you might not realize it) Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & Six”), and Nathan. Zellner and Christoph Zajac-Deneck.
We spoke to the Zellner brothers to explain the meaning behind this quirky film, the choice to set it in modern times, and why there’s so much poop-throwing.
Do the filmmakers who dreamed up “Sasquatch Sunset” believe in Bigfoot?
Among Bigfoot fans, “some believe, and some want to believe,” says David Zellner. “But no matter where you stand, we humans need these stories.”
With advances in science that “essentially almost everything can be explained,” humans need more than ever to connect with the unknown and the natural world, such as Bigfoot. says Zellner.
“So much has been mapped and explained now,” he says. “We hope you feel that sense of wonder when you watch this film. There’s a reason why folklore is with us forever.”
What does the ending of “Sasquatch Sunset” mean?
At the beginning of Sasquatch Sunset, it is unclear when the film is set. All we see are monkey-like creatures in the primeval forest.
However, along the way, the Sasquatch family stumbles upon a redwood tree marked with a red “X” indicating that logging is occurring nearby. they are confused. They then encounter camper tents and paved roads, and the final scene leaves them in front of a huge building labeled Bigfoot Museum.
“We wanted to have a Garden of Eden feel at the beginning of the movie, and then as the family travels, they gradually intersect with the human world,” says Zellner. “It seemed very logical to us to tell the story this way.”
Why do the stars of ‘Sasquatch Sunset’ throw poop?
In Sasquatch Sunset, there are several scenes where the main characters get upset and throw poop. One example is when a cougar munches on the remains of a Bigfoot friend. Another was when I encountered an asphalt road and was completely furious. The Zellners say it’s a nod to the quirky Looney Tunes cartoons of their youth.
“We wanted to normalize Bigfoot’s behavior and make him relatable, like many animals,” says David Zellner. “This includes marking their territory with excrement, as is well known in cats and dogs, and throwing poop like apes do.”
It wasn’t difficult to get the actors on board with the scatological humor, he added. “That scream from Riley, that was all she screamed,” Nathan says with a laugh. David added: “Riley said the[poop-throwing]scene was her favorite. She said to me, ‘You better not cut it!’ ”
