AI technology company Cerence announced that the BMW Group is using Cerence Audio AI to enhance safety features in the BMW Personal Pilot L3 conditional autonomous driving system.
BMW will use Cerence Emergency Vehicle Detection (EVD) to detect approaching emergency vehicle sirens. Part of Cerence’s Audio AI suite, Cerence EVD leverages the unique acoustic structure inherent in emergency siren signals to reliably detect police cars, fire engines and ambulances. The technology provides the autonomous vehicle with the information it needs to give way. In the case of L3 systems, this means advising the driver to intervene and respond. When BMW Personal Pilot L3 is activated, the system detects if there is an emergency vehicle nearby and delays activation. If a siren is detected while driving, the volume of the radio and other media in the car is lowered and the system asks the driver to take over to allow the emergency vehicle to pass safely.
“As autonomous systems evolve, they will accelerate a new era of AI-powered companions that can seamlessly gather information about the various situations drivers may face in the car and on the road and take appropriate action,” said Iqbal Arshad, Cerence’s chief technology officer. “The BMW Personal Pilot L3 is aEmergency vehicle detection This will help improve safety for all road users.”
As defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Level 3 highly automated driving allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel and temporarily divert their attention from the road. The BMW Personal Pilot L3 relieves the driver from the burden in certain situations and controls the vehicle’s speed, distance to the vehicle ahead and lane position. The BMW Personal Pilot L3 is currently available to customers in Germany, first on the BMW 7 Series.
