On Friday morning, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach attended his annual pre-draft press conference with members of the media. The Zoom was Veach’s first time speaking publicly since the NFL Scouting Combine.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs re-signed All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, traded cornerback L’Arius Sneed and added wide receiver Hollywood Brown to the mix. Looking back on the offseason as a whole, Beach seemed satisfied with how things have gone so far.
“When we left Las Vegas (and Super Bowl XV) and had a chance to get together before the combine,” Veach began, “we had a chance to get together before the combine. I think one thing that was clear to us was that we were looking at potentially losing most, if not all, of our defensive line: Mike Dana, Chris Jones, Turk Wharton, Derrick Nnady. And clearly there was great concern there. Considering how our defense performed last year. It was one of the top units in the NFL. They have all played together in the system for a long time. ”
Veach found a way to bring back all four players, led by Jones, who is arguably the mainstay of the entire defense. The GM said this is his top priority this offseason.
“We wanted to make sure he got it done, and I think there was a little bit of a domino effect there,” Beach said. “We moved together. [Sneed], and we were able to bring back Mike Danna, but I think it was really important for us to have Danna, Turk, Nnadi and Jones up front.bring back dru [Tranquill] It was important to us. We focused on maintaining last year’s defense as much as possible. And, as we do every year, if there’s an opportunity to add a playmaker to the Pats, whether it’s through free agency or the draft, we’ll always be on the lookout for that option. ”
With the defense out of the way, Veach turned his attention to finding another weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. It turned out to be former Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Hollywood Brown.
“I think he’s going to be a great one-year addition for us. I think he’s going to do well moving forward,” said Beech of Brown. “I think we’re excited and every year is different and unique. I think we did the best we could this offseason with the resources available to us.”
