As an avid cyclist, I’m all for improving cycling infrastructure, but I’m not sure how building a permanent cycle lane across Hammersmith Bridge would mean reopening a structure that was once closed to cars, vans and buses. I don’t know if it will bring about such big changes. Because the pedestal cracked in 2019. Still, Transport Secretary Mark Harper seems to think so, adding that the £2.9m cost is “another important step towards fully reopening the bridge for motorists”. One question: How?
Who is Estelle?
My Huck recently visited a new affordable housing scheme in east London. There, each block of the development is named after a figure from the women’s suffrage movement, including one named after Pankhurst. What is the name of the building? ester house. If you don’t remember Estelle from the Pankhurst family, please don’t write an angry letter to your GCSE history teacher – Estelle was actually the name of Emmeline Pankhurst, who embraced the socialist cause and helped organize trade unions. This is the middle name of my second daughter Sylvia, a girl in East End class. The Responsible Housing Association’s project director explained the problem. All of Pankhurst’s names had already been taken. “If you’ve ever named blocks, it’s a pain,” he grumbled. “In the end he’ll have 40 different options because the fire brigade will come back and say, ‘No, he’s got one of those in Hammersmith.’
The RSHP architect who designed the landmark 122 Leadenhall Street “hates” the nickname Cheesegrater, he told my hack.It seems like I’m really grateful to him.
ticket only
This is a great story by Jamie Ratcliffe, Chief Community and Sustainability Officer at Sovereign Network Group of Housing Associations. He and his seven-year-old are working on something called the FA Cup Challenge. This will start with Wembley FC vs. Bearstead in the additional qualification round on 5 August, followed by the winner of each match. “There have been some great games so far, including Swindon 4 vs. Aldershot 7, the Black Country derby and Coventry’s epic stoppage-time comeback in the quarter-final,” Jamie said on his LinkedIn I mentioned it in my post. He took to the stage to ask for tickets to Sunday’s semi-final match between Coventry and Manchester United at Wembley. He has struggled to get tickets and his and his son’s hopes of being the first to make the Wembley Stadium challenge from Wembley FC would have been dashed. He didn’t need to worry. His post received a lot of support and he is on his way to Wembley. Coventry need to win now.
the situation has turned
The former hacker recently celebrated two years as the city’s spokesperson. Unfortunately, our lunch to mark the occasion was rather rudely interrupted by the ringtone of his cell phone addressing an article question from a business newspaper. What’s the biggest pain in your new job? “I’m dating people like you,” came the reply.
hard cheese
Advice: If you meet Graham Stark, don’t mention Cheesegrater. The architects at RSHP, who designed the landmark 122 Leadenhall Street, “hated” the nickname, he told My Huck recently. Apparently, it really appreciates him, but personally, I think comparing it to a kitchen utensil should be taken as a compliment. After all, it shows that, unlike the others, this building has at least enough character to warrant a nickname – I’m looking at you, 22 Bishopsgate.
at the top of his game
Safety products company Arco gave the London Eye a new coat of paint last month live on BBC Breakfast. This work he does every three years, with eight painters working five nights a week for six months. “It was an honor to work with the team on this event,” said Steve Dawson, manager of Arco Work at Height, with excitement. I’m not sure I would have said the same considering he was hanging at a height of 68 meters.
