Crunchyroll president Rahul Plini confirmed that plans are in place to fix remaining issues with the popular streaming platform’s mobile version.
Crunchyroll is a great service that brings anime to a global audience, often aligning with Japanese release schedules, but the mobile experience still leaves a lot of room for improvement. It’s buggy and often lags in playback, which can be frustrating when you watch it to catch up on the best anime shows while traveling.

When asked about possible improvements, Purini revealed that updates are in the works. In fact, the experience on iOS and Android should start to improve soon.
Crunchyroll is fixing its mobile app
“Our team is very focused on both iOS and Android apps,” Purini said in an interview. “We have been releasing updates on a very regular basis.”
He told The Verge that people will see the app “getting better every day.” There’s ambiguity in his statements and doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence, but it sounds like he’s aware and understands that he needs to improve.

Coming from an engineering background, Purini reveals that he knows a lot about backend improvements. Later in the interview, he talks about the number of platforms his Crunchyroll is on, and talks about rolling out the service on consoles and smart TVs. This service is published on many marketplaces and requires maintenance on each marketplace.
Mobile will get the attention it deserves, but I’m not entirely confident we’ll see it anytime soon. But gradual changes should make a big difference in the long run. This year, Crunchyroll is going to be even bigger, with big releases slated for Demon Slayer Season 4, My Hero Academia Season 7, and many more.
