To mark this milestone, his daughter, actress and director Zoe Kravitz, paid tribute to him with a sweet message.
“Lenny Kravitz, it has been an honor to have known you for a long time,” she began. “And I have to say being your daughter has been one of the great adventures of my life.”
“You were very young when I was born, so in many ways we’ve grown up together,” she continued. “We’ve been through a lot. We’ve seen a lot. I’ve seen a lot. I’ve seen you change in the most beautiful way, and I’ve seen you change in the most beautiful way. I’ve seen her remain beautiful and unchanged. This is an important way.”
Zoe Kravitz also paid homage to her father’s shirt on stage, infuriating him.
“I’ve seen how you show up and care for those you love. I’ve seen your incredible dedication to your art, but what I’ve seen mainly It was on your shirt,” she said.
“According to my dad, if your nipples aren’t exposed, it’s not a shirt,” she joked. “Sure, you used to embarrass me when you picked me up from school as a kid. But at this point, I have to say that I respect it. You… I’m really going to do it. Your relationship with knit shirts is probably the longest one.”
“You two make each other better. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s a beautiful thing,” she added.
Zoe Kravitz then reflected on her relationship with her father.
“All this time, people have asked me, ‘What’s it like to have such a cool father?'” she said. “And the answer is ‘great.’ That’s great. But not for the reasons some people think. Your coolness isn’t what people think is cool about you. Your coolness isn’t what people think is cool about you. Enthusiasm doesn’t come from your shades or leather pants or knit shirt. It comes from your true love of life.”
“Everything you do is an expression of that love,” she continued. “Your music, your lyrics, your live performances, your home, your love of food, your love of family, your good conversations, your silly jokes, your dance parties, your late night kitchen talks, you live life to the fullest. You’re devouring it. You eat and lick every crumb. Life is your art, and that’s why your music is so inspirational and important.”
“Congratulations, you’re a star,” she said at the end of her speech, hugging her father tightly.
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington also took to the stage to honor the iconic musician.
“He’s more than a friend, more than a brother,” Washington said. “We are twins, but we just don’t look alike. We have had a close brotherly relationship, a friendship, for 30 years.”
“God gave him an incredible talent, but even more, an incredible heart,” she added, calling Lenny Kravitz a “giver” and a “lover.” I commented.
