Devin Haney takes on Ryan Garcia tonight in New York as the arch-rivals renew their rivalry.
Haney and Garcia are 3-3 in six amateur fights, but this will be the 25-year-old American’s first fight as a pro. The fight in Brooklyn was supposed to be Haney’s first defense of the WBC title until Garcia missed the weigh-in on Friday. Haney came a month after relinquishing the undisputed lightweight belt with a clinic win over Regis Prograis in December.
The champion will enter Saturday’s main event undefeated, but Garcia has only lost once as a professional, coming a year ago when he was stopped by a body shot from Gervonta Davis. But Garcia bounced back in December, finishing Oscar Duarte.
Garcia’s recent behavior outside the ring has raised concerns about his mental health, and he dropped three pounds on Friday before taking part in a bet that would pay Haney $500,000 for each pound he was overweight. That means Garcia is not eligible to take Haney’s title.
