In the coming months, Google plans to retire the VPN that was available as part of Google One. There are many protests against this closure, have you taken advantage of it?
Google One VPN first appeared in 2020 as a layer of protection for Android devices, and has since made its way to iOS and desktop platforms. Much of the appeal of this system is that it’s extremely easy to use and incredibly affordable, as it’s available on even the cheapest Google One plan.
But Google says the reason One’s VPN is being shut down is because almost no one was using it.
Google doesn’t say how many people use its VPN service, so it’s difficult to quantify how many people are using it. Google One as a whole has about 100 million subscribers, so it’s safe to assume that: largely Three of them have signed up to add storage to their Google accounts.
Google One VPN had a lot to offer, but it’s important to consider the product’s background. Google was distributing this as a subscription add-on rather than a standalone product. Given that One’s main focus is storage, it’s natural to think that the majority of users didn’t even know this VPN was an option.
And for those familiar with what a VPN is, Google One’s service is unmatched by its competitors. Other VPNs are significantly cheaper but have more features, including the ability to spoof your location. Google didn’t offer this, but it’s a big part of the appeal for many users.
Google’s VPN service isn’t going away completely. Although the company plans to continue offering this feature on Pixel, this is still a big loss for those who have enjoyed the service on other devices.
