CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – A busy week of area college signings continued Thursday at East High School. Wrestlers Daven Hames and Charlie Greene are taking it to the next level. Hames will attend Waldorf University and Green will compete at Hastings College.
James fought in both the 165-pound and 157-pound weight classes last season, but settled fully into the latter by the end of the year. Hames finished his senior season with a 29-28 record, taking fourth place in the 4A East Regional Tournament and helping the T-Birds take third place in the state tournament. When Hames visited the Waldorf and he spent time with the team, he immediately knew it was a good fit for him.
“I talked to my coach a lot and he really likes me. I like him and I talked to all my teammates on the team. I really like them and honestly, I feel like I’m going to do well on this team. I’m going to bond with them,” James said. Ta.
Green had a historic season for the East in many ways. In his junior season he came up just short, but he came back and won the heavyweight state championship in February. Along the way, Green broke the T-Birds’ single-season winning record with 52 wins and earned two All-State titles heading into college. East head coach Thad Trujillo played a big role in Green’s recruitment. Green said Trujillo initially connected him to the Hastings project.
“Well, I was doing wrestling duals at North Platte, and one of the coaches got in touch with our coach. They were like, ‘Hey, we need a heavyweight.’ . And the coach says, “Oh, we’ve got a good heavyweight here.” So he contacted me and he’s been thinking about Hastings ever since,” Green said.
Congratulations to Daven Hames and Charlie Green on their signings.
