Unless you’ve been through some tough times over the past year or so, you probably know that Assassin’s Creed Red is the next mainline Assassin’s Creed title to be released next year. Officially, not much is known except that the game is set in feudal Japan and will be connected to the Infinity hub, the central launcher of the Assassin’s Creed series. Meanwhile, leaks and reports have revealed what to expect, including our own report which revealed that the title will feature his two main characters, Naoe and Yasuke.
Today I wanted to dig a little deeper into Red’s gameplay mechanics and engine. Because, frankly, this series seems like it’s building towards a “new era.”
First, the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise won’t necessarily be moving to a new engine, but it will be using a significantly evolved version dubbed the “Anvil Pipeline.” Sources explain that the Anvil Pipeline will allow different Assassin’s Creed studios (of which there are many) to work from one unified branch instead of having different versions and branches. This means that Assassin’s Creed will now visually benefit from raytraced global illumination and virtual geometry lines.
The move to Anvil Pipeline forced the team to completely overhaul everything in the series, including animations, parkour systems, dynamic weather, and more.
Assassin’s Creed Red’s combat has been described as similar to Valhalla, but with more gore such as blood and decapitations. Stealth also plays a big role in Red, similar to Splinter Cell, where players can extinguish torches, hide in tall grass or bushes, and even lie prone whenever they want.
The footage provided to Insider Gaming on the condition that the footage is not made public shows a major evolution in Valhalla settlement functionality. Red allows players to build large settlements named “Hideouts”. The Hideout is a place where players can freely build armories, dojos, alters, and more. These buildings are also customizable, allowing you to choose the building’s location, roof design, interior layout, and where to display your weapons and armor.
All in all, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is taking a huge leap forward, and the first we’ll get a glimpse of is Assassin’s Creed Red, which is set to be released in the coming months.
