The seven-episode series tells the story of a crew of true-crime podcasters (Will Forte, Siobhan Cullen, Robin Carra) who set out to investigate the disappearance of three strangers in the quaint Irish coastal town of Bodkin. I’ll tell you. (Very tempting, but before you book your ticket to go there, know that this fictional location is located in West Cork and was filmed at both Union Hall and Grandeur, as well as parts of Wicklow and Dublin.) This small, close-knit community hides some pretty serious secrets, and many of the locals aren’t happy about their intrusion. The town’s charming geography hides some heinous events, and the last thing its people want is for the world to find out about them.
Like a movie directed by Jamie Dornan tourist, The series centers on unraveling long-standing mysteries with an eccentric cast of characters forced to endure hilarious situations. The trio was in the village to do a podcast about the Samhain festival, the American equivalent of Halloween. That night 20 years ago, three people went missing during a festival.
At first, they don’t even know if there’s a story to tell, but the podcasters, determined to separate fact from fiction, realize that what happened in this small town decades ago is nothing like they imagined. You quickly realize that it’s much bigger and weirder than it was.
Forte plays Gilbert, an enthusiastic American podcaster with Irish roots who is looking for his next big story. Years ago, he created a podcast that was a huge success, but every podcast he’s created since then has been a huge flop. Although he appears to have a cheerful personality on the surface, hidden financial and marital problems lie beneath.
He uses his charm to gain people’s trust, but viewers become aware of the fact that he has a lot at stake. He must uncover an interesting story, otherwise he can lose everything.
Despite her outwardly positive demeanor, Karen plays a hard-nosed investigative journalist named Dove. Although she lives in London, she is originally from Dublin. She has a healthy disdain for authority and hypocrisy, and she has a keen sense when it comes to detective work. People find her rude and rough. It doesn’t help that she’s simultaneously experiencing the biggest professional crisis of her career.
Kara plays Emmy, a funny, hard-working, and eager-to-please researcher who helps Gilbert plan his podcast. There’s a natural chemistry between the three and the scenes they share are fun to watch.
“Bodkin” comes to Netflix on May 9th.
Upon arrival, they meet Seamus Gallagher (David Willmott). Seamus Gallagher is a capricious and mysterious local character who can turn on amulets to suit his needs. On the other hand, he can also become violent if he feels threatened.
They also meet unreliable redneck Sean O’Shea (Chris Walley) and learn that he’s involved in some pretty shady business and is completely out of his depth.
Bodkin Jez Scharf serves as executive producer and co-showrunner with fellow executive producer Alex Metcalf. The series comes from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, and the former White House occupants include head of film and television Tonia Davis, Ne Ebon, David Flynn, Paul He is serving as executive producer along with Lee. Nash Edgerton will serve as lead director.
Scharf talked about his love for real-life crime stories to the Netflix show. Tudam. “Every time I listen to a true crime podcast, I always think about what it felt like to be a researcher in that town, knocking on doors, trying to get people to share their most shocking and difficult experiences. How ridiculous that may seem.”
He added, in part, that he’s interested in using the creation of true crime podcasts as a vehicle for detective stories. He also wanted to delve into the gulf between truth and story. “That’s something I’ve often wondered.”
Set against the backdrop of this mysterious, dark Irish town, it’s a treat to watch the characters unravel what happened decades ago while simultaneously unraveling the truth about their lives. There is something very interesting.
As Gilbert, Dove, and Emmy come to know, the truth isn’t always black and white. There are always different shades of gray.
