In a lengthy eulogy for his son, Sinise recalled the twin tragedy of 2018, when his wife, Moriah, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in June before Mack was diagnosed with chordoma in August. I reminisced.
While Moira had a successful lymph node removal surgery and was eventually put into remission after undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, her son was not so lucky.
Sinis revealed that her son underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his spine in September 2018, followed by a second surgery in February 2019 to fight an infection.
In May of that year, the family received bad news when follow-up tests revealed that Mack’s tumor had returned and the cancer had spread.
Despite his worsening symptoms and difficult treatment, his son continued to come to the foundation’s offices regularly and continued to work behind the scenes even after he was no longer able to do so, Sinise wrote.
The actor revealed that his last project for Mac’s foundation was a father-son podcast interview.
After stepping back to focus on his treatment and health, Mac turned to one of his passions: music.
Sinise wrote that she believed “music was a thing of the past” because her son could no longer play his primary instruments, drums and piano.
Mack studied at the University of Southern California’s Thorton School of Music, where he later wrote an unfinished piece called “Arctic Circles,” which was “inspired by the winter nature shows I liked to watch while lying in my hospital bed.” I started work on it and made up my mind. To complete it before time runs out.
“The cancer left him paralyzed from the chest down, but he still had limited use of his right arm and fingers of his left hand,” Sinise explained.
Mac was still able to select notes with a stylus fixed in his hand, and members of his father’s Lt. Dan band worked with him to hone the songs.
Composer Oliver Schnee, a friend of Mack’s from the University of Southern California, also worked with him to put the final touches on the arrangement, after which Mack paid for the recording sessions.
