If you use Google Drive on your iOS device, you’ve probably noticed how much better search has become since we rolled out Enhanced Search last month. Unfortunately, when this was first rolled out it was limited to iOS only, excluding Android users. However, as Google announced today in its weekly overview of Google Workspace updates, it will also be available on Android.
First, you can now search for specific file types directly within the search bar. This means that you can narrow down documents by adding “.pdf” or “.docx” to your search terms, instead of hoping for the best when you enter the document name. This is very useful when you know exactly what you’re looking for and can speed up your search.
The second big change as part of this update is that Google Drive search now takes into account the actual content of files in real-time when searching. In addition to matching file names and folders, it now also detects keywords within documents and spreadsheets, and displays relevant query filters as you type your query.
Google originally rolled out the feature to iOS users in March, but has now brought it to Android, which now includes a large portion of the app’s user base. For Android users, this update should be hitting your devices soon as it has already been rolled out to both immediate and scheduled release domains. Although this is a feature that was technically released for Google Workspace customers, this enhancement is available to everyone who uses Google Drive, regardless of whether they have a Google Workspace account or a free personal Google Account. available.
