Google is finally adding a new feature to Maps that it announced a full year ago. Directions at a Glance is currently rolling out to iOS and Android devices and should provide a convenient way to access your current route without any hassle.
What are Google Maps’ at-a-glance routes?
At-a-glance directions are designed to show you your route and estimated time of arrival without unlocking your phone. On Android, these may appear as system notifications. On iOS, Google uses Live Activity to guide you.
Additionally, at-a-glance directions are applied to the route preview window before you press Start. This is useful if you have set a route but want to wander around a bit or change locations before starting navigation. For example, let’s say you want to know the walking route from your hotel to a coffee shop. Enter your coffee shop’s address, confirm your ETA and route, and start walking without actually starting navigation. At-a-glance directions move the on-screen arrows as you move, and update your route if you choose a different route. At-a-glance directions work for different types of transportation: walking, biking, driving, and public transportation.
It’s not particularly groundbreaking, but it’s sure to be a useful feature once you use it. Google Maps can get annoying if you pick up your phone after it’s locked. You’ll need to unlock your phone and return to the app, but the at-a-glance routes allow you to quickly update the latest information about your route without having to touch your phone too much.
