TL;DR
- Google has added another 3D building option to Google Maps.
- The app already offered 3D building transitions as layers, but this option applies to navigation.
Google Maps is currently considered the frontrunner in the mapping space, but Google is constantly adding new features and tweaking the app. And the latest additions appear to be some neat cosmetic tweaks.
Android expert assemble debug We reported in X that Google has added a “Show 3D buildings” option to navigation. This toggle is believed to have been available in version 125 of the Google Maps beta, but the option is not yet visible since this update was applied. See the screenshot below.

The tipster also rightly points out that Google Maps previously offered 3D building toggles as layers. However, this new option is enabled during navigation. 3D buildings layers display buildings with only basic 3D geometry, without textures or other details. Therefore, it is likely that this same level of detail applies to his 3D buildings while navigating. However, it also shows the height of buildings, which should be somewhat helpful when finding your way around the city.
Still, this latest option comes after various other additions over the past year or so. This includes displaying weather and air quality, some AI-related upgrades, and real-time battery information for electric vehicles.
