Although not yet publicly available, Google Messages appears to be adding support for stronger parental controls that will prevent users from sending messages until they receive approval.
The Google Messages app is so widely used that it has become the default messaging app on Android thanks to RCS. That’s why it may be good news for parents that Messages appears to be adding support for parental controls.
Found and shared on Google Messages v20240416_00_RC01 piunica web, Parental Controls in Google Messages lets parents block their kids from sending messages until they approve. Unconfirmed conversations will display a message similar to the following:
Please ask your parent for approval to send.
9to5Google I can also confirm that this message exists in the latest version of Messages, but it has not been published yet.
It’s not entirely clear how this works. This will likely work on a contact-by-contact basis, presumably controlled by parents from Google’s existing Family Link app. Apparently this control covers both SMS and RCS messages.
This is very likely to happen in the early stages of development, so we’ll have to wait for future versions to see how this builds out.
