US users of the Google Pay app will unfortunately have to migrate to Google Wallet instead as Google removes the app from circulation.
Google announced today that it aims to simplify its payment apps in the United States. The company plans to do this by removing the Google Pay app from devices. According to Google, a user has until June 4, 2024 to switch to another app.
This statement was made by Joris Van Mersfg, group product manager for Google Pay. In it, he took the time to enumerate some of the main benefits that migrating to Google Wallet brings, as well as some of the complications that may arise for users who don’t migrate. In most cases, a user will still be able to manage his Google Pay balance in the app until the deadline, and will also be able to view and transfer funds from his bank account on the Google Pay website.
One of the big changes is that users will no longer be able to send, request, or receive money on the app from June 4th. In other words, the app is just a way to check your balance on the go. Please note that this only applies to the US version of the app at this time.
Additionally, Google Pay will no longer notify users of upcoming sales that may be of interest to them. The search giant recommends using alternative options such as the Shop Sale feature found in Google Search. This could be one of the biggest losses for long-time customers, and Google may need to somehow integrate the Shop Sales feature into Google Wallet.
Google seems to be working on improving Google Wallet’s general integration to make it the best payment integration app on the market. While this may be a big loss for many US Google customers, it’s good to see the company working to offer a better alternative. We will keep an eye on this story as it develops and will notify you of any changes.
