Google is discontinuing Google Pay in the US as a strategic move to streamline its payment services and shift focus to strengthening Google Wallet. On Thursday, the tech giant announced on its blog that Americans can use the payment app until June 4, after which they can transfer their Google Pay balances to their bank accounts.
Starting June 4th, Google will shut down the U.S. version of its standalone Google Pay app. The blog also reported that users will be able to make payments through Google Wallet after June 4, and that it is used five times more than the app in Japan.
“To simplify your app experience, the U.S. version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be available starting June 4, 2024. Our most popular features, like tap-to-pay in-store and managing your payment methods, will be unavailable starting June 4, 2024. “can still be accessed through Google Wallet, which is five times more used in the US than the Google Pay app,” the blog reads.
The company added that it hopes to make this transition as smooth as possible.
Additionally, it announced that this change will not affect Google Pay users in India and Singapore.
“We want to help make this transition as smooth as possible. From online checkout to tap and pay in store, wherever you typically use Google Pay remains the same. Nothing will change for the millions of people who use the Google Pay app in India and Singapore as long as we continue to develop it to meet the unique needs of these countries.”
Even after the closure of the US version of the Google Pay app, users will still be able to witness fund transactions through the official payment service website.
“Until June 4, 2024, you can use the U.S. version of the Google Pay app to view your Google Pay balance and send money to your bank account. After June 4, 2024, you can continue to send funds from the Google Pay website. and transfer money to your bank account,” the blog added.
However, users cannot send, request, or receive payments through the US version of the Google Pay app. “Starting June 4, 2024, you will no longer be able to send, request, or receive money from others through the U.S. version of the Google Pay app,” the blog concluded.
