When Google releases the Pixel 9 series later this year, phone owners will get an unexpected feature: a new modem.
Citing Google insiders, Android Authority reports that Google plans to equip the Pixel 9 with a Samsung Modem 5400, which will add support for 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN). This means your phone will be able to communicate with satellites, allowing you to send emergency messages even in remote locations and cell phone dead zones. This feature allows you to notify emergency contacts or send a message to emergency services if necessary.
The service will reportedly initially be offered by T-Mobile as part of SpaceX’s “direct-to-cell” Starlink service, and will initially support texts but not calls. SpaceX recently received FCC permission to expand cellular Starlink testing in the United States, including statewide testing in California, Washington, Texas, and Hawaii, and is preparing to test the feature globally.
In early March, SpaceX announced that it had successfully tested its cellular Starlink service using unmodified cell phone models from its Galaxy, iPhone, and Pixel lineups.
Android Authority says the Pixel 9’s emergency text messages act as responses to very specific prompts, allowing emergency services to streamline conversations and get you the help you need faster. This is similar to how Apple’s Emergency SOS feature works on the iPhone.
Google announced in February that it would work with AST SpaceMobile to promote satellite connectivity for Android phones. The company joins carriers AT&T and Vodafone in investing $110 million in AST Space Mobile. AST SpaceMobile has been working to launch orbiting cell phone base stations in space, with mixed results.

Meanwhile, Android Authority points out that in addition to the Pixel 9 series, satellite connectivity will also be available on the next-generation Pixel Fold.
