Google will brand its next foldable Android smartphone as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to align with the rest of its Pixel 9 lineup this fall, according to a new report.
When the first Pixel Fold launched, it launched in the period between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 launches. Despite being much higher priced and closer to the Pixel 8’s launch, the Pixel Fold lacks some of the features of the Pixel 8 series. This makes some sense considering it’s running his Tensor G2, the same as the 2022 phone, rather than the new Tensor G3.
This year, Google seems to be aligning its second-generation foldable model perfectly with the rest of its fall flagship lineup. We previously learned that the Pixel Fold sequel will use the same Tensor G4 found in the Pixel 9. Android permissionsAs a result of this integration, the foldable model will be branded as the “Pixel 9 Pro Fold,” according to a “Google insider.” Until recently, Google reportedly called it the “Pixel Fold 2.”
The new report doesn’t provide any clear details about Google’s intentions with the former Pixel Fold 2. However, considering that they have the same processor, the Pixel 9 branding makes it easier to understand what features to expect. This follows the pattern established with Google’s mid-range A-series phones, and the Pixel 7a comes with some features unique to his Pixel 7. Similarly, the inclusion of the “Pro” branding confirms that pro-level features (such as Gemini Nano on the device, pro camera settings, etc.) are available on the new foldable device.
It remains to be seen when Google will release this alleged Pixel 9 Pro Fold. If the company chooses to include it in its fall 2024 lineup, up to four Pixel 9 devices will launch at the same time. Leaks have previously revealed that Google is preparing the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and even larger Pixel 9 Pro XL, and this latest rumor suggests an even larger option will be added.
Launching in the fall will set Google apart from other Android device manufacturers. Android device makers typically release foldable phones at different times than traditional candy bar devices. For example, Samsung typically launches its flagship Galaxy S phones in January or February, while the Galaxy Flip and Fold launch in August.
