HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding holding company, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), and its subsidiary, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, signed agreements with shipping company Pan Ocean, ship management company POS SM, and classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to apply AI-based solutions.

By signing the letter of intent on June 27, 2024, the parties will actively Using AI-based technology to enhance ship safety and reduce carbon emissions future.
Regarding ship safety, the “AI Shipboard Safety Management Package Solution” developed by HD KSOE will be utilized. The solution diagnoses the status of major onboard equipment in real time to prevent accidents while the ship is in operation, and automatically recognizes emergency situations and unexpected events to support rapid response.
To this end, the two companies plan to apply the above solution to a 174,000m3 LNG carrier currently under construction for Pan Ocean by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The ship is scheduled to be delivered to Pan Ocean Co., Ltd. in December of this year.
HD Hyundai Marine Solutions’ AI-based solution “OceanWise” is also being applied to carbon emission reduction. Specifically, OceanWise measures and predicts carbon emissions using accumulated big data and AI algorithms based only on the ship’s location, and provides optimal navigation routes that minimize fuel consumption.
Pan Ocean plans to use the solution to reduce carbon dioxide emissions generated during ship operation, improve ship operation efficiency, and reduce costs (OPEX). ABS will also verify the reliability of the solution and in the future will consider ways to work with OceanWise to automatically issue approval documents when measuring carbon dioxide emissions as required by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
“We will do our utmost to ensure that Japan’s marine industry can secure global competitiveness in the fourth industrial revolution that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) technology and lead the market at a global level.” Ahn Jeong-hoPan Ocean’s CEO said:
“By working with Korea’s leading shipping companies, ship operators and trusted classification societies to advance marine AI solutions, we plan to realize HD Hyundai’s envisioned maritime transformation.” Kim Sung JunThe CEO of HD Hyundai Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering pointed out:
“The importance of maritime AI solutions that provide optimal operation guidelines is expected to continue to grow.” Lee Gi-dongsaid the CEO of HD Hyundai Marine Solutions.
“Through this business alliance, we will explore supply channels for AI solutions.”
Last month, HD KSOE and ABS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Liberia International Ship and Company Registry (LISCR) to collaborate on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to eliminate vessel safety blind spots.
The memorandum aims to use advanced technology to improve mariners’ situational awareness, which the partners say could ultimately help improve on-board autonomy.
