hollywood, florida – Local 10 reported on a tragic and fatal attack involving a small dog in the Hollywood area this past weekend.
Following the report, a woman has come forward who claims she was attacked by the same dog last year, questioning why more wasn’t done to keep her neighborhood safe.
Last Sunday, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu named Luna was attacked and killed by an unrestrained large dog in the city’s Liberia neighborhood.
Hollywood police spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said officers found a small dog dead outside a home on Lowry Avenue west of North 26th Street.
Luna’s owner, Abe Masleh, shared video with Local 10 of his desperate attempts to save her, but it wasn’t enough.
“He grabbed her by the neck and she was crying while he was punching her. He wasn’t going to let her go,” Masleh said.
According to Broward County court records, this was not the first time the dog in question had attacked.
Last July, the dog’s owner lost control of the pit mix while walking it and attacked another woman. The victim did not identify herself, but said she was bitten multiple times while protecting her two Chihuahuas.
The woman expressed her fear and stressed that she felt unsafe walking in her neighborhood because of the danger the dog posed.
Ms Masleh questions why the dog was not classified as dangerous after the first attack and is calling for the dog to be euthanized.
“Owners have a responsibility to do the right thing and really need to euthanize their dogs,” he said.
Attempts by 10 local businesses to contact the owners for comment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, discussions are underway with the Hollywood Police Department regarding next steps regarding the dog’s situation.
