A special vigil was held in Hollywood on Sunday to remember Nex Benedict, a non-binary 16-year-old who died the next day after an altercation with several other students at her Oklahoma school.
Hollywood — A special vigil was held in Hollywood on Sunday to remember Nex Benedict, a non-binary 16-year-old who died the next day after an altercation with several other students at her Oklahoma school.
Police said Nex’s death did not result from physical trauma caused by the altercation. Wakes and memorial services were held across the country while the families await the full results of autopsy and toxicology reports to further clarify the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Supporters gathered for a service at the West Hollywood United Church of Christ.
Nex’s death has heightened the sympathy of various groups and allies across the country seeking answers.
“This is really impacting us in the trans community. This is weighing on us pretty heavily,” said event co-organizer Ryan Casata. I wanted to pay my respects to him.”
