AUSTIN, Texas – A promising campaign last season has raised expectations for Texas Longhorns football in 2024. The storied program’s annual spring game will be held on April 20th and is free to watch.
The Orange vs. White spring game will be held at 1:00 PM Central Time and will be televised on the Longhorn Network. If you don’t have cable, you can always try DirecTV Stream for a free streaming trial. There are also discount options for Sling TV.
The latest forecast calls for a 45% chance of scattered thunderstorms, forcing discussion of the possibility of cancellation. Rival University of Oklahoma, in an effort to overcome the lightning storm, postponed its scheduled spring game from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
After winning the Big 12 Championship, Texas (12-2) earned the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns lost to Washington 37-31 in a thrilling national semifinal.
Redshirt sophomore QB Quinn Ewers (3,479 yards, 22 TDs) has made a huge leap forward, and sophomore QB Arch Manning, nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning, will be on hand to carry on the momentum. It is expected that.
Ewers lost nearly every target from last season, including Xavier Worthy. Names to watch include Isaiah Bond, a transfer from Alabama, and second-year receiver Jontae Cook II.
Sophomore running back CJ Baxter (659 yards, 5 TDs) and junior Jadon Blue (398 yards, 3 TDs) will be the best options in the backfield, with sophomore wild card Quintrevion Wisner kicking. He will be a versatile option in the return game and overall offense.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian lost a number of players to the NFL Draft, including 2023 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year Byron Murphy II and DL Tyvondre Sweat. True freshman edge rusher Colin Simmons looks as advertised and will fill some of that big gap. UTSA transfer Trey Moore joins with 22 sacks over the past two seasons.
Linebacker Anthony Hill shined in his freshman debut primarily as an outside edge threat. The freshman All-American appears to be moving more into an inside linebacker role heading into his sophomore season. This switch could ignite his game and help lead the Longhorns to the promised land.

Here’s part of the Associated Press’ breakdown of Ewers’ thoughts on returning to Texas for another year.
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers’ football career has always been so hectic that he thought it was time to slow down.
Enjoy spring to the fullest. Enjoy the 2024 season and Southeastern Texas’ advancement into his conference. The NFL, which remains his goal and dream, could wait another year. And the payoff could be even greater.
Texas, which made its first appearance in the College Football Playoff last season, concludes spring practice this week with Ewers aiming to lead the Longhorns to the SEC. The Longhorns’ annual spring scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, unless canceled due to inclement weather in the forecast.
It’s not like he wasn’t thinking about leaving. After he lost to Washington in the playoffs last season, it took more than a week for Ewers to announce he would return without turning pro.
“I feel like I’ve been rushing my whole life, so I’m going to take a year to slow things down and not rush things,” Ewers said in March, in his only media appearance this spring. “My senior year (in high school) I skipped a grade and it went by so quickly. I was at Ohio State University for a semester, so everything went by so quickly. So the whole process… Take your time, don’t look too far ahead, and just enjoy being here.”
He probably would have been considered a top-10 quarterback in this year’s draft class.
“I had some people put together a really good chart that says the more you play and the more experience you get, the better you’ll play and the more successful you’ll be in the NFL. Hopefully. I just wanted to put myself in a better position to succeed at a high level,” Ewers said.
“In the back of my mind, I always knew I would be back for another year,” he said.
