How do I watch movies?
Do you use a streaming service like Netflix, go to the movie theater, or find it on a website that can give your computer malware?
Well, some Iowans have another option, or potentially. create Alternative options for the benefit of others.
That’s thanks to Free Blockbusters, an organization comparable to Little Free Libraries, small libraries created by community members commonly found in neighborhoods.
Across America, there are little blue and yellow rental boxes under the name Free Blockbuster where people can pick up physical copies of movies.
What is Free Blockbuster?
The first Free Blockbuster was founded in 2019, according to the organization’s website. According to the New York Times, it started with Brian Morrison, a former Blockbuster employee and film and television producer.
Apparently Prime Minister Scott Morrison is using the name and logo of a video store retailer that once had thousands of stores. The New York Times reported in March that Dish Network, which owns the Blockbuster brand, is “aware” of the project.
Where can I find free blockbuster movies in Iowa?

The Des Moines Register has confirmed that two of the three free Blockbusters listed on the organization’s location map are still operational.
The two free Blockbusters that are known to work can be found at:
- 2419 Crestview Ave., Iowa City Front Yard
- 390 W. Prairie Dr., Fairfax, Hawksridge Park
Fairfax’s free Blockbuster includes DVDs, CDs and microwaveable popcorn, founders Amy and Greg Stewart said in an email to the Register. The Stewarts are also responsible for his six Little Free Libraries in Fairfax.
He is always looking for popular children’s DVDs. You can also leave a donation in the Free Blockbuster Box.
How can I create my own free Blockbuster?

According to Free Blockbuster, finding something like a newspaper box or building a house to store your movies is the same as building a small lending library. Of course, instead of books, you’ll be filling a kiosk of sorts with DVDs or VHS (or whatever you want to share). All you have to do is decorate it and spread the word about it.
All that’s left to do is, in the words of Free Blockbuster’s motto, “Make the movie, leave the movie.”
