Layoffs hit technology and gaming: Sony announces eight job cuts, citing ‘changes in the industry’
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will cut approximately 900 jobs, representing 8% of its global workforce. With this announcement, Sony becomes one of the latest companies in the industry to make significant headcount cuts due to dynamic changes within the industry. CEO Jim Ryan explained the decision in a blog post on Tuesday, saying the workforce restructuring is due to significant changes the industry has undergone.
“The industry is changing a lot and businesses need to be ready for what’s to come,” PTI quoted Ryan as saying in the report. “We need to continue to meet developer and gamer expectations and drive future technology in gaming, so we are taking a step back to ensure we are ready to continue providing the best gaming experience to our community. According to a PTI report, the impact of Sony’s decision will be felt across the Americas, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. The impact extended to the closure of PlayStation Studio in London and significant layoffs at Firesprite Studio. Additionally, various functions across Sony Interactive Entertainment in the UK will be reduced. The company has ensured that affected employees will receive severance pay.
