Lily Gladstone award nominations Murderers of the Flower Moon It was a historic production, with the cast breaking milestone after milestone, becoming the first Native American Golden Globe and SAG winners, and the first Native American Oscar nominee.
Although the number of votes was just short of making her the final superlative, poor thingEmma Stone wins Academy Award for Best Actress – The Gladstone effect will continue to ripple through the industry, native members of the community say.
spirit ranger Author Joey Clift was at a viewing party with other Native creators Sunday night. “Seeing a traditional Osage group perform a song, participate in a conversation, and be honored by an industry that hasn’t respected us in that way for 100 years makes me feel like anything is possible.” ” he says. “It felt like I was truly allowed into the room for the first time.”
TV writer Lucas Brown Eyes (young & hungry, alexa and katie) agree. “All the Native people I know were so excited. They were watching with their kids. It was like the moon landing, and someone on that stage was receiving an industry-recognized award. I was collecting them,” he says. “When a native project comes to fruition, it’s usually through a lot of effort by a few people, and the industry doesn’t just say, ‘Of course,’ and open the door. ‘Oh, is this what support looks like? ” It was like,
The day after the Academy Awards ceremony, Gladstone’s name continued to trend on social media, with both disappointment at missing out on the Oscar and appreciation for her performance on and off screen. “Every step of the way, she pushed other Indigenous creators and gave big interviews a shout-out to Indigenous comedians she wanted to work with,” Clift said, adding that through her legacy, Gladstone has become a “high-profile advocate”. He added that he didn’t just participate.outlet like hollywood reporter and vanity fair as well as spending time working on Native-run podcasts and radio shows like A Tribe Called Geek’s. nomad cast. “She really leveraged her platform to not only address her own career, but also the excitement of millions of people in her community about the nomination.”
Gladstone herself has only posted once on social media since the Oscars ceremony – she said this a few hours after the ceremony had ended. answered When a fan asked about her outfit, she told a fan that her Gucci dress was decorated by Joe Big Mountain of Iron Horse Quillwork.
“Every native designer who got to experience a red carpet moment [during Gladstone’s awards run] – This is what we do. We, as indigenous peoples, look left and right and work with each other,” says actress and author Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls, reserved dog, clone high). “Bringing these lesser-known artists and designers into a high-profile space is a truly wonderful gift for everyone. We’re excited to see how Lily will continue to work with grace and class, humor and dignity throughout this awards season. When I saw it done, I never missed a step. No notes!”
Mr Clift added that Gladstone’s award campaign’s decision was even more impactful because it set a precedent for future candidates in the community. “We don’t necessarily have a path of ‘act this way on the red carpet,’ so it’s cool to see people like Lily Gladstone.” [Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo] And I hope that more Indigenous creators will come out of the park and leave a good example of not only how to work in the entertainment industry, but also how to uplift others. ”
Much of the disappointment over Gladstone’s loss has to do with the fact that the opportunities for Indigenous people to be within the range of the Academy Awards are extremely rare, close to zero. Not only is she the first Native American to be nominated for an Oscar for acting, but few have been cast in roles significant enough to be considered for the award. Murderers of the Flower MoonAccording to a research summary by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, there was only one Native American protagonist among the top 1,600 theatrical releases over the past 16 years.
“In many cases, [someone loses an award] People say, “It’s okay, you’ll have another chance,” says Brown Eyes. “But there was no other opportunity like this.” [for Native Americans], That’s why I was disappointed. Most actors have appeared in a lot of movies and are nominated from time to time. That means for a Native actor to be nominated, he would need to win a whopping five amazing roles. That’s unprecedented. If there were only zero to one or two movies a year featuring Native Americans, that person would have to play every role for 10 years. ”
By contrast, 15 white women have won Best Actress multiple times, including this year’s winner, who has been nominated five times.
“This scar is more representative of the situation we’re in, because we know this was lightning in a bottle. Just an opportunity to act and play a role. There was support.” [Gladstone] I had it,” Brown Eyes continues.
Still, many Native creators say Gladstone’s awards season has been a powerful source of inspiration for their community. “It’s a shame that the Oscars didn’t honor Lily Gladstone last night, but everyone at Native Hollywood is ready to write the script that will win her an Oscar,” Clift said. Kaufman added that Gladstone is already set to star in Charlie as well. “It’s great to see Native people who haven’t yet entered the industry, both children and adults, wanting to pick up a pen or a camera.”
Schmieding agrees with the optimistic outlook. “I think people are waking up to the value of Native storytelling because it’s become so visible now,” she said, noting that Ava DuVernay once shared it with her. “She said she didn’t want black media to be seen as a renaissance because that would mean the end of black media. I really took that to heart and we’re in the same situation. We believe there is. This is not a renaissance. We will continue to work hard, gain leadership and influence in the industry, and continue to do so.”
