Meta has integrated AI into Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger in Canada. However, this new feature cannot be turned off, so not everyone will welcome its presence.
The company said in a statement Thursday that MetaAI can be used “to get things done, learn, create, and connect with what’s important to you.”
Media reports say it is currently available in Canada, Australia, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The company listed several applications, including asking for recommendations for restaurants with sunset views or vegan-friendly restaurants, and asking for explanations of subjects students may be taking exams in in the future. Additionally, the program can generate images based on text prompts.
Meta AI is accessible from the application’s search bar and utilizes the Llama 3 model.
The Associated Press reported that the official Meta AI chatbot inserted itself into conversations in a private Facebook group for moms in Manhattan. The group also claimed to have a child at the New York City school, but apologized when group members questioned it before the comment disappeared, according to a screenshot shown to The Associated Press.
“I apologize for the mistake. I’m just a large language model, with no experience or children,” the chatbot told the group.
Facebook’s online help page says Meta AI will join group conversations if you’re tagged or if someone “asks a question in a post and no one responds within an hour.”
According to a statement from Meta to Global News, this feature can be turned off, but it cannot disable Meta AI’s widespread presence on the platform. Nevertheless, the spokesperson said there are feedback tools available for users who are dissatisfied with the responses they receive.
“Meta AI aims to be a helpful assistant, showing up in your search bar to help you with your questions. You can’t opt out of this experience, but it will help you understand how you typically respond to different results. ,” the spokesperson said. Said.
“We use this feedback to continue training our models to make them less likely to produce potentially harmful outputs and improve the system’s ability to automatically detect policy violations.”
Since ChatGPT popularized the idea, AI systems from Google, X, and others have slowly emerged. But with billions of users, Meta’s integration of AI will be one of the largest distributions of such technology to date.
