JAKARTA – Facebook and Instagram users may have recently encountered problems accessing the platform. Since the beginning of this year, Meta’s service has experienced his 33 suspensions, including his two biggest failures since 2022.
It’s easy to believe that Facebook is under attack by malicious hackers, but the reality may be even worse for the company. Technology experts who spoke to MailOnline revealed that Meta may have created a system that is too complex to run, especially as the company continues to cut its workforce.
Systems are becoming more complex than just one technical entity. So what was once only a minor issue is now causing system damage, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said of his company’s current state of technology.
Experts say these obstacles are “extensive” for the meta, and the problem will only get worse.
Now, the situation is getting worse as companies like Meta try to cut costs, including by reducing the number of employees. Last May, Meta laid off more than 10,000 staff, up from the previous 11,000 in November 2022, losing about 10% of its total staff each time.
In my experience, removing people from a system rarely stabilizes the system. “It’s not that great, but if you try to keep this system running, you’re going to lose 10% of your hands from the keyboard,” said cybersecurity expert James Bore.
Meta’s latest deal with a top record label also considers the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry. The deal requires approval and compensation before releasing a song featuring a digital replica of an artist’s voice.
The deal also includes improved medical benefits and pensions, as well as an expanded portion of streaming revenue contributed.
Music industry voices are represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), and the endorsement covers approximately 160,000 actors and media professionals.
In January and April of this year, Meta’s services, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, suffered approximately two-hour outages. The issue appears to be widespread across Meta services, affecting not only Threads users but also Meta Quest VR users.
Experts say the technical issue is not just a temporary hiccup, but could pose a serious threat to the meta. Excessive system complexity, reduced staff numbers, and lack of improvements in technology infrastructure are factors that can cause disruptions more frequently and have a broader impact.
Although Meta recognizes this issue, the challenge for businesses to address this issue remains significant. Increased service interruptions can have a negative impact on a company’s reputation, user trust, advertising revenue, and, in turn, can affect a company’s stock price.
In this increasingly complex situation, Meta must take immediate and appropriate measures to improve its systems and ensure the reliability of its future services.
