Meta Platforms Inc. announced that it will shut down its Threads platform in Turkey within two weeks to comply with orders from local authorities concerned about data sharing.
The Turkish Competition Authority said last month that cross-platform data sharing between Threads and Instagram violates Turkish law and could cause “irreparable harm.”
Mehta disagreed and said he would appeal. “Turkish Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, other meta services, or threads in other countries are not affected,” he said.
Threads will be unavailable starting April 29th. Meta described this as a temporary outage.
In March, Turkish authorities imposed a separate fine of 4.8 million liras (approximately $148,000) per day on Meta, pending compliance measures. These fines will take effect from mid-December.
Meta is “abusing” its position by merging data from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which is hindering competitors, the competition authority’s board said.
Meta is also facing threading issues in the European Union. Europeans are given the option to sign up without linking their Instagram account. Links to Instagram are a major point of contention in the EU, where new rules on digital platforms prevent big tech companies from sharing data between different services.
