Meta plans to discontinue Facebook News, a dedicated news-focused tab in Facebook’s Bookmarks section, in the US and Australia in early April 2024. Last year, Meta deprecated Facebook News in the UK, France, and Germany.
Meta said this is part of its ongoing efforts to better align investments with the company’s products and services that people value most.
“As a company, we have to focus our time and resources on the things people have said they want to see more of on the platform, such as short-form video.” It’s down more than 80% in the last year. We know people don’t come to Facebook for news or political content; they come to connect with others and discover new opportunities, passions, and interests. As we previously shared in 2023, news accounts for less than 3% of what people around the world see on their Facebook feed, making it just a small part of the Facebook experience for the majority of people. Mehta said in a blog post.
It added that changes affecting Facebook News features will not impact Meta’s products or services in these countries.
Users can still see links to news articles on Facebook. News publishers will still have access to their Facebook accounts and pages, and like any other person or organization, they can post links to articles and direct people to their websites. “News organizations can also continue to leverage products like Reels and Meta’s advertising systems to reach their audiences and drive people to their websites. “We can maintain 100 percent of that,” Mehta assured users and publishers.
The company added: “While we plan to discontinue Facebook News in these countries, this announcement does not affect the terms of our existing Facebook News agreements with publishers in Australia, France, and Germany.” These agreements have already expired in the US and UK. Additionally, as we continue to invest in products and services that drive user engagement, these countries will not enter into new commercial agreements for traditional news content and will in the future offer new Facebook products specifically for news publishers. Nor do we provide any. ”
