Are you ready for Meta Quest 4? Considering what a big upgrade Quest 3 was when it launched in 2023, the next release of Meta will come with some great new features and ultimately this It could be one of the best VR headsets ever.
Meta will probably still be a few years away from releasing a successor to the Quest 3, but with all the new competition it’s worth considering what to expect. There aren’t many rumors yet, but here’s what to expect from MetaQuest 4.
Quest 4 release date
Meta released the original Quest in 2019 and quickly followed up with Quest 2 in 2020. The Quest Pro came out in 2022, but the Quest 3 didn’t come out until last year.
If Meta launches another work-focused headset like the Quest Pro 2 before the next VR gaming headset launch, we can expect the Quest 4 to arrive at Meta Connect in October 2025 or 2026.
However, there are rumors that Meta will launch. The cheaper Quest 3 Lite or Quest 3S will quickly replace the Quest 2.
Better AI
AI is taking the world by storm, and we expect the next version of Quest to fully embrace this new technology. When you look at things in perspective, Meta Quest 3 now uses a fast Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor that boasts 2.5x higher GPU performance and 8x better AI throughput than the Quest 2’s XR2 Gen 1 chip.
Meta is currently using artificial intelligence in the Quest 3 to enhance the color pass-through camera for mixed reality experiences, improve hand tracking speed and accuracy, understand voice commands, and more.
If Qualcomm updates the Extended Reality Processor in time, the Quest 4 could be equipped with the next-generation Snapdragon XR2 chip. In theory, this means that Meta Quest 4 could come with better AI features that could help make virtual worlds look more realistic and improve interactions with non-playable characters (NPCs) in VR games. This could mean that there may be.
In a recent Meta blog post, we suggested that breakthrough advances in AI will help create realistic avatars on the Quest platform. It seems likely that there will be a Quest 4 with a meta codec avatar. Meta posted a video on YouTube showing what will happen in the future. That’s a good sign.

We’ve also seen how AI upscaling like Nvidia’s DLSS can improve the graphical quality and frame rate of PC games. Meta’s super-resolution feature is similar, but it’s not useful in some situations. As the platform’s AI capabilities improve, upscaling will enable faster and better graphics in more Quest VR games.
There are already several ways to use AI to generate 3D graphics. Examples include neural radiant fields (NeRF) and Gaussian splatting, which uses real-world photos and videos to digitally capture depth and images. This is an example shared by Luma Labs on his X when announcing his Android version of a mobile app for creating shareable Gaussian splats.

The generative AI can also draw amazing 360-degree panoramas, as you can see in this X post from Moon VR Home.

That said, we expect the Quest 4 to heavily emphasize AI in the next generation, especially considering Meta’s investments in recent years.
improved mixed reality
With Quest 4, we expect to see further improvements in the cameras, sensors, and performance needed to render views that closely resemble the real world. While realistic graphics are important, long-term comfort and breathability are essential for everyday use, and these elements are almost entirely absent in VR.
Meta’s Quest Pro is the only production VR headset to ship with an open perimeter. This means you can see the room and floor from the sides and bottom while wearing the device. Despite being as heavy as the Apple Vision Pro, most people agree that the Quest Pro is more comfortable and feels less separated.
Another smart decision by Meta was to move the Quest Pro’s battery to the back of the head strap to more evenly balance the weight on the front visor. Comfort and proper weight distribution are especially important for active gaming and fitness apps, and these are of keen interest to Meta, owner of his popular workout app Supernatural.
Meta repurposes the unique design aspects of the Quest Pro into the Quest 4 and introduces mixed reality upgrades to make your next wearable just that: hours of gameplay, exploration, movies, or work. I think it would be great if we could make it wearable and enjoyable.
upgraded display
These are significant improvements over the Quest 2, but VR headsets need to be as crisp and clear as possible. Display technology continues to improve, and VR headsets like the Vision Pro are accelerating progress. The Quest 4 may have a higher resolution screen than the Quest 3.
Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 supports 3K resolution per eye at 90Hz. Meta opted for a 120Hz 2K display on the Quest 3. Equipped with a faster chip, Quest 4 can increase display resolution without sacrificing frame rate. This means the Quest 4 could feature crisp 3K resolution per eye at 120Hz.
