Not daunted in the slightest by the issue of Llama 2’s AI stickers being published on Facebook last year, Meta is showcasing the features of its new model Llama 3, which features real-time AI image generation. on WhatsApp.
Open source and free for both research and commercial use, Llama 3 is touted as the best free large-scale language model, surpassing Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and Google’s Gemini. One of its strengths is its integration with widely used meta apps such as WhatsApp. And that integration now includes ultra-fast image generation.
Meta announced that it will soon roll out a beta version of its real-time AI image generation and Meta AI for the web for WhatsApp users in the United States. The image appears as the user writes the prompt, changes, and immediately changes to reflect any new words added to the prompt.
In a demo video shared by Meta, the prompt “Imagine a soccer match on Mars” begins, and the AI-generated image immediately changes to show a soccer field in an otherworldly landscape. It looks like it is. This is the fastest AI image generation we’ve ever seen. Of course, speed doesn’t mean quality. It remains to be seen how Llama 3’s image generation compares to the likes of his Midjourney and OpenAI’s DALL-E 3.
According to Mehta, images produced with Llama 3 are “crispier and higher quality” than Llama 2, and the model also does a better job of rendering text. This is an improvement seen in almost all major AI image generators in their latest updates. Models can also animate images and turn them into GIFs.
The new features are currently available to users who have access to the beta version of Meta AI. Similar to WhatsApp, Meta’s AI assistant is also being rolled out in English on Instagram and Facebook in Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Currently, Meta.ai also has a standalone browser-based version, but this is also limited to certain countries.
Meta has also released two freely available open source Llama 3 models for developers. Both the 8 billion parameter model and the 70 billion parameter model are accessible on major cloud providers.
