Meta’s VR headset recently received update v64. According to Meta, they’ve added some improvements to the software, including higher quality mixed reality passthrough in the case of Meta Quest 3 (although I didn’t see any major differences after installing the update) headset).
It has now been discovered (first Twitter user @Squashi9) This update also includes another upgrade to Meta’s hardware, with Quest 3’s room scanning feature, Space Scan, being greatly enhanced thanks to AI.
Quest 3’s space scan is different from the usual boundary scan that sets up a safe play space for VR. Instead, Space Scan plans the room for your mixed reality experience and marks the walls, floor, and ceiling to ensure the experience is calibrated correctly.
There is also an option to add and label furniture, but until update v64, this part had to be done manually. Now, when you scan a room, Quest 3 will automatically highlight and label your furniture. According to my testing, it works fine.
Annoyingly, the headset did not allow me to take screenshots of the process. So believe me when I say that all your furniture was not only scanned and accurately marked, but also accurately labeled. It also got on the windows and doors, which I didn’t expect.
The only mistake I found was that the chair in the living room was designated as “sofa”, but this is more important than SpaceScan’s ability to detect what type of object each item is. The problem also seems to be the lack of more specific labels in Meta. Furniture.

This feature isn’t exactly a surprise, as Reality Labs rolled out a version of this feature on Threads back in March. But what’s surprising is how quickly it unfolded after it was announced. However, given how well it works and how easy it is to scan a room, I’m not going to complain.
so what?
Adding furniture allows you to use MR and VR apps. The table can be used as a designated desk in apps like Horizon Workrooms, and the VR experience changes between standing and sitting modes as you sit on or stand up from the designated couch.
On the other hand, some apps can use detected doors, windows, walls, furniture such as bookshelves to adjust how the mixed reality experience interacts with the space.
Meta reduces the effort of adding these data points, giving app developers even more reason to consider furniture when designing VR and MR experiences, making them more immersive.
This also means that Meta is better than Apple Vision Pro. Meta is not yet capable of producing as detailed indoor scans as seen with Meta’s hardware. However, it’s not really a big deal until the software starts to really take advantage of this feature. transaction.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this improvement, but if you’ve already done a space scan or two on your Quest 3, you might want to try again, as the new scan should be much more accurate. maybe.
