A man who had worked at Microsoft for more than 30 years suddenly found himself fired from his job in February. His termination came as a result of Human Resources (HR) adopting a hub-and-spoke model for learning and development (L&D). This is a strategy he passionately advocated. Now, months after losing his job, Jeff Bogdan, former director of learning and development (L&D) at Microsoft Windows, has taken to his LinkedIn to share his “incredible experience” at the tech giant. I shared my experience.
“My wonderful 33-year journey at Microsoft came to an end in February when my job ceased. I spent the last two weeks at Microsoft giving my huge second family a proper After that, I spent two weeks at Microsoft, and spent the next few weeks in Chelan, half with my family and half alone with my thoughts.” wrote in the post.
Bogdan said his entire career at Microsoft has been an “incredible journey.” But the biggest accomplishment for him, he said, was over the past two years when he pitched and won his L&D role at Windows.
“My premise was that after successfully spreading a ‘learn everything’ mindset throughout the organization, it was time to spread a concomitant ‘teach everything’ mindset. I focused on organizing his 2,000-person learning investment. – Strived to build a personal organization and coordinate it with learning and development services from the parent organization and central human resources department. ” he writes.
Additionally, Bogdan revealed that he was laid off from his job as a result of HR adopting the L&D hub-and-spoke model he was proposing. “Unfortunately, even though my department already had his L&D team in place, there was no place for me at the table,” he continued.
“After much consideration, I have come to the conclusion that I am far from being the ‘R-word’. I still have a lot to contribute, so I now begin my journey to find a second career,” he added. Ta.

“Microsoft definitely did the wrong thing by letting a great person like you leave. You were a source of inspiration and a great mentor. But you’ll be a great addition. I can’t wait to see what shenanigans you’ll do next! ” one user wrote.
“I wish you the best of luck in your next endeavor. My position at Microsoft ended after 20 years and 7 months. I miss being there and will always consider it my professional home.” another user commented.
“I can imagine this has been a bittersweet experience. If you’ve been with a company this long, you can feel a little confused and overwhelmed. I’m sending you lots of good thoughts and I know that the next adventure will be great. See what happens and don’t get too hung up on anything specific. By following your intuition and trying something new and perhaps uncomfortable, you may end up in the right place.”
