On Tuesday, February 27, Microsoft was scheduled to release the final non-security preview update for Windows 11 22H2. But not only was that update never released, but Microsoft also quietly updated its Windows 11 22H2 update plans.
In a post on its support page, Microsoft revealed that the last day Windows 11 22H2 users can get non-security preview updates will be extended by more than a year in some cases.
The message states that Windows 11 22H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions will continue to receive these updates until June 26, 2024. Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session editions will receive these updates. The renewal period will be longer and will end on June 24, 2025.
Microsoft said the changes were the result of “user feedback” and ensured that Windows 11 22H2 users can continue to “take advantage of our continued innovation.” In other words, these PC owners will have access to more new features, at least for a while.
Even after these two new dates are reached, Windows 11 22H2 users will continue to receive monthly security updates for some time. According to Microsoft’s support page, official support for the Home and Pro versions will end on October 8, 2024.
Enterprise and Education users of Windows 11 22H2 will continue to receive security updates until October 14, 2025. This is also the end of support date for Windows 11 22H2 Windows 11 IoT Enterprise users.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has extended certain support updates for Windows users, but it’s unusual for the announcement to come literally on the last day of a planned update. It will also be interesting to see if Microsoft plans to create more enhancements for future Windows 11 releases.
