Jeff Bogdan, director of learning and development (L&D) for Microsoft Windows, was fired in February after 33 years with the company. His firing came as a result of HR adopting his L&D hub-and-spoke model that he had been proposing. After losing his job, Bogdan shared his experience at Microsoft on LinkedIn.
“My 33-year journey at Microsoft came to an end in February when my job was terminated. I spent my final two weeks at Microsoft saying a ‘proper farewell’ to my huge second family. And then I spent those two weeks at Microsoft, spending half of my time with my family and half of my time alone with my thoughts. ” Bogdan wrote in the post. He goes on to say, “My entire MS career has been great. The three products I’m most proud of are Windows Phone, Zune, and Windows 95. But my biggest takeaway is… It was during the last two years that I pitched and landed the ball,” he added. The role of L&D in Windows is to organize learning on the premise that once you have successfully spread a “learn everything” mindset throughout the organization, it is time to spread a “teach everything” mindset accordingly. I focused on that. We invested in an organization with 2,000 employees and worked to coordinate it with learning and development services from the parent organization and central human resources department. ”
